As the second semester of our first year comes to a close, the Class of 2011 has already begun to make its mark on RPI. We have met and exceeded our expectations of our capability to achieve. But of course, we’re the Class of 2011!

To continue our tradition of exceeding expectations, the Class Council has begun to raise funds for our Senior Class Gift. While graduation seems far away (an eternity to some), the process of choosing and raising money for a Class Gift takes time, effort, and support. Starting now ensures that our class will really make a statement about how committed we are to the future of RPI.

Class Gifts have been a long-standing tradition at Rensselaer. They represent a type of philanthropy that demonstrates loyalty and devotion to our institution.  The clock in the Hassan Quad, the ’87 Gym, and the stone sign at the corner of 15th Street and Sage Avenue all serve as symbols of class identity at Rensselaer. Soon, aided by the generosity of the Class of 2007, the renovation of the 15th Street Footbridge will commence, continuing the tradition of support RPI students have shown for their alma mater.

As our class continues to succeed at RPI, your donations and your input to the gift selection process is critical. We will be asking our class to donate annually to our class gift fund. In our senior year, we will ask for ideas on how best to use the contributions we have gathered during our four years. When the time comes we will work with the Institute to choose a gift that is both popular and feasible, and it will be the best Class Gift yet.

We encourage every member of the Class of 2011 to participate in this venture. No class has ever had 100% participation, and we want to change that. If each of us donates $10, we could raise more than $12,000 in our first year alone.
